I was talking with a client recently and shared this example of how we can begin to shift our understanding from considering the outside world or events happening as the cause of our feelings to the inside where it all happens so very fast. The example was – having a loud discussion with my spouse (sometimes called an argument) and in the throws of it, I am sure it is his behavior or point of view that is causing my reaction. Suddenly the phone rings and its my best friend -I shift faster than the speed of light, from loud and frustrated talking to a tone of fun and joy – when we hang up- I am right back to the thinking of argument and my point of view. If we could slow the action waaaaayyyyyy down we would see the shift in our thinking, our feelings, and our reactions. We would see our interpretation of the argument as the cause of our frustration and our thinking about how great it is to talk to our friend, and back again. Thought happens very quickly and awareness brings it to life very quickly – and so it does look like it is happening “to” us and not “through” us. Trust me though, if you slow it down even just once a day – the great intelligence behind the system will have you seeing it in action. When we “see” it as opposed to simply agree or think it- the view changes drastically, and organically. Give it a try.
