Have a New Idea
”I can’t understand why people are frightened of new ideas; I am frightened by the old ones.” John Cage
It’s clearly time to create – to invent – to make all things new. In attempting to discern the possible lessons and opportunities that these last 3 years are bringing – at least the categories are clear. A new way of dealing with conflict; a deeper understanding of diversity and its complexity, creative and compassionate methods of communication and dissolving resistance.
Fundamental to the new is to let go of the old…not trying to overcome the old (which leaves it lurking in the shadows) but true releasing – to allow the new to emerge. In the Vedic tradition this has the element of destruction…I think of dinosaurs…they didn’t really evolve into a new version of themselves- they actually disappeared. Occasionally we see a slight resemblance to the gecko. Of course, this can bring a bit of fear into the equation – what will replace these old forms – and how do we discover or uncover the new that is quietly waiting in the corridor.
For me it is Trust, Trust and more Trust…or perhaps the even deeper word – Faith. If ever I have felt a trying time of faith, it has been in these last few years. How can I have faith when I can’t see where any of this is going – how do I choose or decide between two negative alternatives – why is this happening…and on and on the mind goes -causing more stress and less answers.
When I realized I am recycling the old – the lightbulb appeared…time to invent a new version of faith. Time to create trusting actions that can magnify the possibilities and allow the old to pass away.
Of course at times techniques can be helpful – since I am a visual person – using my imagination to see the old floating away like balloons towards the sky – gives me a sense of complete release….or using a mind magic trick to have that thought or worry go “poof” and disappear. Whatever method you employ, its time to get serious – time to capture this unique slice of time, where we can all let go together of thoughts, feelings and actions that do not serve. Find people to invent with – those whose energy is focused on the new and start knowing that Trust and Faith provide new outcomes for everyone.
And for fun and fortification – have an Irish coffee on Thursday!
