The Business of Isness

If I had a dollar for every time, I heard someone say “it is what it is” – I could definitely retire on a beach in Hawaii and sip funny coconut drinks all day.  There is truth in that phrase and at times it comes with a kind of tone of resignation- like there is nothing to be done…rather than its deeper intention of knowing what “is” is a path to freedom.  Our eastern philosophers brought our attention to the importance of being in the moment…as in truth the moment is all there is…we really cannot live in the past or in the future…we can only dwell in the now.  From Thich Nhat Hahn to Eckart Tolle and so many others, we keep being reminded to stay present to what is.

Then there is moving beyond just the interpretation of nowness so to speak…to asking a deeper question of exactly what is?  At the risk of annoying all readers with prepositional madness and esoteric or philosophical points of view…let me cut to the chase.  What is, speaks to the greater intelligence – the deeper wisdom- beyond what we can see or hear about; there is an attribute of goodness always present, never absent.  That is what is…that is the meaning of the title…the business of isness.

When we are able to see thru the eyes of intuitive mystical awareness, we see all good.  We see the human arc of history (as Dr. Martin Luther King pointed out) moving towards justice.  WE become serious warriors for that truth being more available to people; and therefore our business.  In all that is happening currently, there is a definite bend towards either despondency about what is happening, or desperation to pretend it isn’t happening.  When we can look more closely, we can see the pattern of existence moving forward in a way that is a bit startling but also contains the possibilities of a just and global society – a new level of commitment to compassion and harmonious collaboration.

I am willing to be considered a Pollyanna over this one – and I am not saying it does not take discipline and focus and reminders.  But when I go to the possibilities of “isness” being wonderful I can see beyond the circumstance or event.  I don’t’ discard the event or its impact- I just hold out for something greater to appear.

By holding that space, I am allowing it to come more quickly and with less resistance.
