Who Do You Think You Are

There are a couple of different inflections on the title of this blog…one is the “who do You think you are…fully indignant and haughty.  Then there is the curious way to ask – Who DO you think you are?  Depending on how you ask is what the answer might be.  The true answer is beyond the form of the question.

Are you your personality?  Are you your body?  Are you your experiences?  Well, if you know your personality you can’t be it…if you can see your hand, then you are not your hand and experiences are fleeting.  Closer to the correct answer is you are that which is aware of all those things…called in Eastern Philosophy as pure awareness…moving in and out of all kinds of forms.

To know who you truly are is the base of how to begin a life of joy, ease and wonder.  When we identify with a specific form, we call in the limitations that form encompasses.  When we remain the observer….that which is aware we have ease and grace – we notice that we are so much more than we have been told.

Awareness is free to create – free to define – free to change our minds and ignore our personal thinking.  We can utilize the tools of experience – thought, consciousness and the Infinite Intelligence that not only creates but also maintains what we create, including the body.  It’s an optical illusion that we are any of those specified things…before the thought takes form we are that simple awareness of all forms and all potentialities.

The reason this is important is it cuts through suffering.  The purpose of all spiritual systems…to end suffering.  But what if suffering isn’t real…it’s a label…it’s a thought…it’s a way of describing pain and other impermanent aspects of life.  Awareness lives in the eternal and when we come to know we are that – as they say in India..tat vam asi ..we are free.

It just takes a second to shift – from this is not what I want to this is what is, and I am greater than what appears.  Having come through what is commonly called suffering, I can tell you that is a sleight of hand…one moment sorrow and the next incredible beauty and awe at the Love that never ends…never is absent….never takes a vacation.

Try it this week – look at something in the world at large, or in your own personal world and shift your eyes just ever so slightly till you can see more than the experience and more than the label…in a second – your entire perspective can shift and even if tears are flowing, you can also feel the joy rising.  The realization that beyond form – is the greatest love of all.
