Bring on the Light
We have just passed Denali and are headed for Christmas and Hanukah. Each of those festivals is known for bringing the Light. Ohio is sitting under the grey these days- some well needed rain but mostly just grey. I am so not used to it with having moved from 352 days of sunshine.
One of the teachings of each of these auspicious occasions is that it focuses on the light from within. That light is not dependent on weather- or season, but rather going to the center and finding the light that never goes out. It may seem to dim and flicker, but it cannot be extinguished.
I think these celebrations are designed to help us remember to look beyond circumstances and events to the truth of each being regardless of the state or station they hold in life. We each carry light that shines brightly when we are aware and allow it to come through us without obstruction.
We know our streetlights or lightbulbs have a power source -and when the power is on, we have light everywhere we go. Many years ago now the San Francisco Bay area had an earthquake known as the Loma Prieta. As luck would have it, I was at the World series that night – a bucket list item watching the SF Giants play the Oakland A’s. The lights were the first things to go out – and then you noticed that you were in a rolling motion that depicts an earthquake. The concession folks got out their flashlights and helped to empty the stadium with ease and grace. I noticed that night that even with the lights out, there was never complete darkness. The moon, the stars and the light of the sky gave us enough illumination to find our way.
As we begin to find our way through the darkness of our time, it is helpful to remember that we carry the light wherever we go.
As instructed by a master teacher, we are the Light of the World and this is no time to huddle in the grey. Allow this beautiful season to take you to a brighter place and let your light so shine that Hope dawns, ideas flourish, and we over come any hint of darkness.
