Leap of Faith or Baby Steps
I think the idea of Baby Steps to greatness was made famous in the film “What About Bob” – where Bill Murray plays a patient to Richard Dreyfuss’ psychiatrist character. Its both funny and a little dark but it brings up the question of whether we are better off taking baby steps to a dream or perhaps a Leap Of Faith – skip the steps and go for it.
Obviously some things are more conducive to that than others – but the same foundation is required for both. Trust that regardless of where you leap or how far, you know you will land on your feet. Baby Steps are built on trust too – trust that if you take enough, you will eventually get someplace. I have often asked myself if Baby steps guarantee that you will actually arrive at your destination or if a leap into the unknown (but the right direction) gives you more inspiration. I am definitely on the side of leaping…I can recall many moments in my life when I could have taken a few steps to get me further down the road or I could fly. I am pretty sure those of you who know me, know I preferred flying. I can tell you with great sincerity that faith never failed me. Remember its not just a leap – it’s a leap of faith.
If you know this quote – “whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it” Goethe. For many years now, I have turned to that quote to inspire boldness in myself and I am here to tell you that I have always gotten the results of the promise. Sometimes I took Baby Steps but more often than not, I ended up missing the bus cause it took longer to step than fly. If you watched the last basketball game of the Olympics you saw my favorite flyer – make 4- 3 point shots in 3 minutes – one in the last seconds of the game. Nothing more thrilling to see than Steph Curry airborne with three’s on his mind.
There is nothing wrong with baby steps – they are often necessary as we progress to our personal promised land…but for me, looking towards the final minutes of the game – let me leap with full on faith that everything wonderful will appear as my feet touch the ground.
And of course for some get up and go, here is that man of movement and music to help us along.
